Who We Are

Midwest Counseling Associates is a locally rooted counseling practice dedicated to providing compassionate, high-quality mental health care. We believe therapy is most effective when it is collaborative, respectful, and tailored to each individual’s needs and goals.

A cozy waiting room with light blue walls, featuring brown leather sofas, a side table with decorative items, a plant, a desk with a chair, and wall art.

Our therapists use evidence-based, trauma-informed methods to support emotional growth, self-awareness, and healing in a calm, comforting space where clients feel heard, respected, and safe. We value authenticity, empathy, and practical skill-building to help clients navigate both current challenges and long-term wellness.

Hello! My name is Amy Steve. I am a licensed Independent Social Worker, but more importantly, I am a mental health therapist and individual that is compassionate and cares deeply about helping children, adolescents, and adults overcome the roadblocks that they may face on their journey through life.

In practice, I approach each person with acceptance, authenticity, and a safe, nonjudgmental space for you to share your story. I believe that each person is unique, so that is why therapeutic treatment will be individually tailored to meet your specific needs.

I have experience working with a variety of individuals to address a wide range of emotional and behavioral concerns. Special interests include the treatment of anxiety, depression/mood disorders, ADHD, children with emotional-behavioral issues, anger management, life transitions, relationship issues, self-esteem, trauma, stress management, and grief/loss issues.

I utilize person centered, strengths based, and solution focused approaches through integrating a variety of therapy techniques that includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, EMDR, Play Therapy, Expressive Art Therapy, and Mindfulness.

I appreciate being a witness to and a part of your journey towards growth and healing.

Brock Osthoff, LMSW

Therapist
Dubuque Office

Hi, I'm Brock Osthoff, and I've lived in Dubuque my entire life, which has given me a deep connection to the community and an understanding of the unique challenges people face here. With a Master's in Social Work from Clarke University, I have a passion for working with individuals of all ages in my community, and have had previous experience working with children and college-aged clients.

In my practice, I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help clients identify and reframe negative thought patterns, enabling them to manage stress and anxiety more effectively. I also incorporate Play Therapy for younger clients, giving them an opportunity to express themselves in a safe and creative way to better understand and process their emotions.

My approach is built on empathy, respect, and a collaborative relationship where you feel heard and supported. I believe that everyone has the capacity for growth and change, and I'm committed to helping you find your path of healing, self-discovery, and peace.

Life is full of challenges that can test our resilience, emotions, and sense of direction. During difficult moments, mental health can be just as affected as physical health, yet it’s often overlooked. Prioritizing mental healthcare helps people understand their feelings, cope with stress, and develop healthy ways to navigate obstacles. By acknowledging struggles and seeking support, we give ourselves the strength to grow, heal, and move forward.

Hello! My name is Olivia Cummings-Deaner, and I am a temporarily Licensed Mental Health Counselor. I recently graduated and am currently completing the requirements for full licensure. I earned my undergraduate degree from Iowa State University and my master’s from Liberty University. Having lived in Oelwein my entire life, I feel a deep connection to the community and a strong desire to provide care to its residents. I have a passion for working with people of all ages, with experience supporting middle and high school students as well as adults.

In therapy, I focus on creating an open and trusting relationship with each client. Often, it can be incredibly helpful to simply talk to someone about difficult experiences—and that is where I can help. I primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy, and I also incorporate mindfulness, play techniques, and skills-based approaches to help clients manage anxiety, process emotions, and develop effective coping strategies. My approach emphasizes a person’s strengths and the tools they already have within themselves.

I look forward to being a part of your story and supporting you on your path toward healing, growth, and happiness!

Hello, I’m Vanessa. I’m a Licensed Independent Social Worker with over 20 years of experience, and I truly value the opportunity to walk alongside people during some of life’s most challenging and transformative moments. My goal is to meet you exactly where you are — without judgment — and support you as you grow, heal, and build resilience.

I received my Master’s degree from the University of Illinois–Chicago and have proudly called the Cedar Valley home ever since. Over the years, I’ve worked with adults and families from many different backgrounds who are seeking change, learning new coping strategies, or navigating complex health concerns and major life transitions.

When we work together, you can expect a warm, supportive space where your thoughts and emotions are validated and respected. I focus on your natural strengths and resilience while using practical, solution-focused strategies to help with emotional regulation, stress management, and healing from trauma or emotional pain. I believe you already carry strengths within you — sometimes we just need help uncovering and strengthening them.
